WENCUAN EARTHQUAKE NEWS: Quake lake expected to shrink

The water level in Tangjiashan quake-formed lake in southwest China’s Sichuan Province is expected to fall on Tuesday, three days after drainage efforts began.

Abandoned trucks flow like toys in the sea of water gushing out of the Tangjiashan quake lake in Sichuan province yesterday. The volume of water flowing into the lake’s drainage channel has increased, but the authorities still worry heavy rainfall and aftershocks can cause a breach in the lake’s dam leading to flash floods. Drainage of the quake lake through a manmade spillway speeded up to 500 cubic meters per second on Tuesday morning, far faster than the estimated influx of 110 cubic meters per second, Xinhua reporter Li Yun reported from Tangjiashan.

Li quoted Ge Zhenfeng, commander-in-chief at the Tangjiashan quake lake emergency headquarters.

The headquarters has tightened up monitoring of the site and has in the meantime begun to evacuate some of the emergency workers, mostly soldiers with the People’s Liberation Army and the armed police.

As of 7:20 am, the lake’s water level stood at 742.8 meters, slightly down from the 742.96 meters reported 12 hours ago, said Song Dongfeng, an officer of the hydropower force of the armed police.

More than 200 armed police officers have been working around the clock for four days to drain the lake, which threatens some 1 million residents living in the lower reaches of the river if it overflows.

A manmade spillway started to drain the lake on Saturday morning and military engineers have fired short-range missiles several times on Sunday and Monday to blast boulders in the channel and speed up the outflow.

More than 250,000 people in low-lying areas in Mianyang City were relocated under a plan based on the assumption that one-third of the lake volume breached the dam.

The Tangjiashan quake lake, formed after quake-triggered landslides from Tangjiashan Mountain, blocked the Tongkou River running through Beichuan County, one of the worst-hit areas in the May 12 quake.

WENCHUAN EARTHQUAKE NEWS:Mass evacuation underway for fear of ‘quake lake’ burst

Mass evacuation underway for fear of ‘quake lake’ burst

Up to 1.3 million people in west China’s Sichuan Province may have to evacuate to higher ground for fear of a major “quake lake” burst as a result of flooding and strong aftershocks.

On Friday Tan Li, Party Secretary of Mianyang City and chief of Mianyang City Quake Control and Relief Headquarters, issued an order to 1.3 million people living downstream from Tangjiashan, a deepening quake-induced lake. They must rehearse evacuation to higher ground demarcated by government departments in preparation for a worst-case scenario.

Currently, at least 190,000 people in at-risk areas downstream from the quake lake have been evacuated, after Tan’s first order was issued yesterday.

The mass evacuation, dubbed a “drill” by local government officials, is said to make way for a possible flood discharging operation set for the weekend.

In accordance with a notice posted by the Tongkou Township Government of Mianyang City seen by Xinhua reporters at the site, starting 8 a.m. on Saturday till the warning is lifted, all people are banned from activities at a line below 36 meters — a mark the level of the flood water might come up to when the quake lake fully opens.

The fear is that Tangjiashan Lake, formed by landslides that blocked a river known as the Jianjiang after the May 12 quake, is at risk of breaching its bank. This has worsened as heavy downpours started about 10 p.m. on Wednesday and lasted into Thursday around Tangjiashan, driving up the water level in the lake.

Tangjiashan, one of 35 such lakes, is inaccessible by road and can only be reached by foot or air.

By 4 p.m. on Thursday, the water level was 745.5 meters at its highest point before the debris blockage, about 22.78 meters from the lowest barrier.

Meanwhile, the seismological observatory in Sichuan Province is predicting that aftershocks will continue along the northern end of the Wenchuan-Beichuan-Qingchuan faultline in the coming days, with the most powerful being estimated to go around 6.5 in terms of magnitude.

WENCHAN EARTHQUAKE RENEW:Possible link between Wenchuan quake and astronomical phenomena

Experts from the Guangdong Astronomy Association have suggested that the Wenchuan quake might be related to specified astronomical factors.

Quake time: first quarter

The devastating Wenchuan quake happened on the first quarter (the eighth day of the fourth month of a Chinese lunar year). At 11:47 AM, the moon reached its first quarter, a point at which the sun, the earth, and the moon formed a right-angled triangle. Measured from the earth, the sun and the moon formed a right angle. On this particular day, the lunisolar tidal force exerted a particularly strong influence on the earth.

A number of previous severe earthquakes have taken place around the first and the last moon quarters:

Alaska was hit by a 9.1 magnitude earthquake on March 9, 1957 (the 8th day of the 2nd lunar month), precisely when the moon was at first quarter.

An 8.8 magnitude quake hit Ecuador on January 31, 1906 (the 7th day of the 1st lunar month), one day before the first quarter.

An 8.0 magnitude quake hit Gulang County of China’s Gansu Province on May 23, 1927 (the 23rd day of the 4th lunar month), one day before the last quarter.

Haicheng County of Liaoning Province was hit by a 7.3 magnitude earthquake on February 4, 1972 (the 24th day of the last month of a Chinese lunar year), one day after the last quarter.

Three celestial bodies in the same plane

Ordinarily the motions of the three celestial bodies are not in the same plane, but form a 5° angle. Wenchuan was hit by the quake at the moment when the sun, the moon, and the earth all lay on the same plane.

If the hypothesis is correct, this unusual phenomenon could result in friction between tectonic plates.

Sun and moon at the same latitude

On the eve of the Wenchuan quake, the sun and the moon were also at the same latitude.

On May 11, 2008, the sun was at 18°N, and as the moon moved north it reached the same latitude. With both celestial bodies at 18°N, their resultant force might have triggered the earthquake.

Quake epicenter and intensity are determined by earth tectonics, but timing might be influenced by other celestial bodies’ tidal forces, radiation, and magnetic field. When the three celestial bodies lie in a particular juxtaposition, the resultant combination of their forces could provoke an earthquake.

Two powerful astronomical tides

According to the Guangdong Astronomy Association, the relevant authorities need to pay attention to two powerful astronomical tides in early June.

One will appear at 21:00 on June 3, 2008, a point when the distance between the moon and the earth, at only 357,251 km, is the shortest since Nov 11, 2007. The other will take place at 03:23 on June 4, 2008, when the moon, the sun, and the earth are on the same line. Normally there would be a significant interval between such events. In this case, however, it was no more than 6 hours. Thus a consolidated astronomical tide will be formed, possibly producing a significant impact on atmospheric, oceanic, and solid tides of the earth. After the 8.0 magnitude Wenchuan quake, the tectonic plates were dislocated, and energy release through aftershocks has not fully dissipated the tension.

Clearly, occurrence of such astronomical tides in early June merits vigilance, said the association.

SICHUAN EARTHQUAKE Update: preparing to drain swelling quake lake

Recent updates of SICHUAN EARTHQUAKE: Rescuers are preparing to dynamite the barrier of a swelling quake lake, which has posed a new threat after a devastating 8.0-magnitude temblor ravaged southwest China’s Sichuan Province.

A view of Tangjiashan Lake is shown from above today. The lake, which formed after the May 12 earthquake in Beichuan County, Sichuan Province, is threatening thousands of quake survivors. Armed police officers and People’s Liberation Army soldiers are expected to blast the barrier lake today before it bursts.

Helicopters had airdropped professionals and materials for the operation by 7:49 a.m. Monday onto the dam of the barrier lake at Tangjiashan in Beichuan County, which was formed by landslides that blocked a local river known as Jianhe after the May 12 earthquake.

Soldiers load cases of water onto a helicopter this morning. The military plane carrying food, water and power generators took off at 8 am today to support soldiers who hiked to the road-blocked Tangjiashan Lake area yesterday. The lake formed after the May 12 earthquake in Sichuan Province and is threatening thousands of survivors. Soldiers are expected to blast the barrier lake today before it bursts.

Sunday’s adverse weather hampered the operation, but the weather and visibility were fine on Monday morning, said a spokesman with the Mianyang Airport Headquarters for Quake Relief Flight Operation.

A Mig-26 helicopter had carried a large bulldozer from Leigu in the vicinity of Tangjiashan which could only be reached on foot currently.

As a backup operation, a group of armed policemen arrived on foot at the Tangjiashan lake area at 00:35 a.m. Monday and set to work immediately. They would assault the lake barrier in case bad weather and low visibility continued to hamper airdrop efforts.

The policemen were among about 1,800 armed police officers and People’s Liberation Army (PLA) soldiers who started hiking on Sunday toward the swelling lake, some 3.2 km upstream from the Beichuan County seat, from which thousands of quake survivors have been evacuated since last Wednesday.

A PLA officer told Xinhua that the soldiers each carried 10 kilograms of dynamite and planned to carry out small scale blast to drain the swelling water.

The lake dam is in danger of bursting as the water level rose by nearly 2 meters on Saturday to 723 meters, only 29 meters below the lowest part of the barrier, which measured 752 meters high.

The risks were only heightened as high winds and thunderstorms were forecasted for the area on Sunday and Monday and the area was hit by a strong aftershock measuring 6.4 magnitude on the Richter scale on Sunday.

The lake is now holding more than 128 million cubic meters of water and may cause a devastating flooding if the barrier bursts.

Altogether 35 barrier lakes were formed by landslides after the May 12 earthquake, which has left 62,664 people dead and 23,775 more missing.
